OrbitalMap a live chronicle of orbit

In the Solar System

Dinkinesh

A small main-belt asteroid, here because Lucy passed it in November 2023 as an engineering test and found a moon nobody had suspected - and the moon turned out to be two touching lobes, the first contact binary ever seen orbiting another asteroid. It is a reminder of how little a point of light gives away: everything interesting about this one was discovered in the four minutes it took to fly past.

Everything the map shows is worked out in your browser from published orbital data - nothing on it is a stored picture of where things were.
