An ordinary yellow dwarf star, and the reason anything here is lit. It holds 99.9% of the mass of the Solar System, is a hundred and nine Earths across, and shines by fusing some six hundred million tonnes of hydrogen a second in a core at fifteen million degrees. The light leaving that core takes tens of thousands of years to reach the surface and eight minutes to cover the rest of the way here. It is about 4.6 billion years old, roughly halfway through its life.
